As I look back at this past semester, I realize how much Media Criticism has taught me. The media is constantly sending us messages and setting the standard for what is and isn’t okay in the media. For my final assignment I read three of my classmates blogs to get their take on how they examine the media and apply specific methods of examination to them. I was very surprised to see so many unique perspectives on how the media send us messages through various source. It was also very cool to see so many of my favorite television shows get critiqued by my classmates.

I really liked how you broke down the messages and themes being sent in House of Cards. As someone who has not actually seen the show myself, you were able to give me a pretty good idea of what I would be seeing in the show. You also did a really good job applying semiotics and identifying specific themes in your text, some of which I wouldn’t have even thought to look at in your image example. The upside down American flag and Abraham Lincoln examples you identified were intriguing to see for the first time. I think it’s really cool how you can basically find out what the whole show is about in just one picture because of all of the symbolism it shows. If I had any suggestion for your blog post, it would be to get more in depth on how the symbols in House of Cards have an effect on society. You could explain how people maybe have changed opinions about politics based on certain depictions in the show. Maybe you could have included a video from the show that illustrates the power of a certain symbols to help people better understand. But overall, I think you did a really great job explaining semiotics in House of Cards. This clip I found from the show really exposes the politics the show portrays: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D32nSORy6R4 Wow I really do need to watch this show!

You made several really great points when you talked about how much we use media every day. It’s a crazy concept to think about the fact that we have media exposure just about anywhere we go in America. The examples you gave from television to just checking our mail…. Media runs our society. You also make a great point when talking about how important it is to take that extra step to examine media. Also love the Office example, one of the best comedy shows ever. You made a great point when talking about its influence as a mockumentary style TV show, and how it sets precedents for how other comedy television shows are run and what messages they send. I mean what other show could establish such a legendary phrase- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zd6dDVOdOq0 – That’s what she said! If I could make any suggestions for you, it would be to find a more specific approach and apply it to The Office. For example, you could try to apply semiotics to the show. The Office can perceived in different ways by many different people. Some people may get offended by the jokes and others can find them funny. Maybe you could have dove into the messages that are sent and how they can be perceived by the audience. Besides that, I really liked your perspective on the media and how much it really does affect our lives.

I really enjoyed your take on how the narrative of Breaking Bad is really important in terms of Media Criticism. Many people could easily watch the show and just think of his journey from having cancer to becoming a top drug lord is too ficticous to relate to. Instead they just consider it for what it is, “just a tv show”. But you make a great point by saying that someone could easily relate to Walter’s state of desperation and desire to want more. Breaking Bad could send the message to someone that it is okay to take that risk. It’s a show filled with these different type of emotions which allows different viewers to take away different things. I mean, you could take away a million different messages from this picture. If I could give you any suggestions, it would be to get even more in depth in terms of the narrative in Breaking Bad. There are relatable situations in just about every episode of the show, which is what gives it such popularity. If you dive into more specific narratives, you could definitely pull even more signs that people could identify with. But overall, I really liked your perspective on how media shape our lives.
Conclusion
This semester has been a really eye opener for me. Sitting and watching movies and television without interpreting anything from it isn’t good. The media shapes our decisions and our societal norms. Through class discussion, videos shown, and approaches learned in Media Criticism, my thought process has completely changed and I will never look at any form of media the same way again. These past few blog assignments have also given me the ability to express this in a way I never have before. Being able to get your thoughts down about anything in the form of blogging is fun and allows you to be creative. I look forward to trying it more!
